ENG 695 The Long Essay
The long essay is an opportunity for you to research and develop some topic in medieval or Renaissance rhetoric in depth. Naturally, you cannot cover any topic in full detail within the 2,500-3,500 guideline length. But you can show that you have researched substantially and that you understand this focused topic within the vast field of the history of discourse. Most papers use between 4 and 10 sources. You may cover a topic you have begun to deal with in an earlier short paper, but the topic and development must clearly be original (the topic of the long paper should be a lot more focused). Generally, all topics in medieval (Augustine onwards) and Renaissance rhetoric are available. I will need to approve your topic before you start (You should have your topic approved no later than the tenth week of class). Example papers from earlier semesters are available on request. Due date: April 29. If you would like a comment on a rough draft, I can guarantee to process essays I receive by April 15. After that point I will try but can't guarantee a comment. Please furnish me with a clean print out (Use MLA Format: Name, date, course at the upper left; title centered with space above and below; double-spacing is optional; number the pages) via my mailbox, AND send me a digital text in a personal mail message. |
